The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has said that security personnel who come to the polling units without election identification tags will be arrested.
He stated that personnel deployed to polling units will not carry firearm but only handcuffs.
He directed all security personnel deployed for the election to be at the polling units by 5 a.m on election day.
He also ordered them to keep watch on election materials and personnel, and to also ensure proper conduct by stakeholders.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Adamu spoke alongside the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in Abuja on Tuesday at the National briefing for Accredited Observers (Domestic and Foreign) for 2019 general elections.
“Security personnel must wear their election identification tags with legible name tags on their uniforms for easy identification.
“Personnel deployed to polling unites will not carry firearm but only handcuffs.
“Security personnel deployed to polling units must look for vote buyers and sellers.
“We will be watching political thugs and we shall make arrest,’’ Adamu warned.
He added that any security officer who accompanies Very Important Personality moving from one polling unit to another, whether in uniform or in mufti, will be arrested and prosecuted.
“Any voter, party official, or member who wears an attire with party logo; or anyone shouting party slogan or moving with his political party vehicle or with party inscriptions shall be arrested and handed over for investigation,’’ he added.
The IG also pledged that all the security agencies would be professional and neutral in order to ensure free, fair and credible election.
