Consider the following hardware components of the device.Design
When first unboxing the device, you get the familiar feeling that you are dealing with something that is not new. This is attributed to the fact that it resembles the iPhone XS Max from the front.
Visually, the phone looks similar to the ones before it both front and back. There is no wasted space at the bottom. It has an earpiece that doubles as the speaker and comes packed with a 3D TOF sensor as well as a 12MP f/2.2 selfie camera.
Like the others before it, it comes with a Gorilla screen which offers the best protection on earth. In addition to this, it also has an oleophobic coating that shields it from constant smudging and that is easy to clean.
The phone's frame is still stainless steel where the silent switch and volume keys are located on the left. On the other hand, the key is on the right, which is also where the SIM tray is.
One thing to note though is the rare panel. It is made of an Ion-strengthened glass by Corning, which is mostly flat without counting the 2D edges. Uniquely though, the phone does come with a glossy finish hence the term, matte glass. Regardless of the colour of iPhone 11 Pro Max you go for, they all come with a frosted finish at the back.Display
The iPhone 11 Pro Max has a 6.5" OLED touchscreen of 458ppi density. There is also the XDR aspect. This refers to the eXtreme Dynamic Range, which means that the new screens are brighter at 800 nits. What's more, they are capable of lighting up to 1200 nits if need be. The XDR OLEDs also increase the contrast two folds from 1,000,000:1 on the XS models to 2,000,000:1 on the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max.
The display offers an excellent pixel density at 458ppi. It comes with a resolution of 1242 x 2688 px with widespread HDR10 support. It comes with an automatic white balance correction. The phone exceeds the promised maximum brightness of 800 nits and a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1.
When it comes to colour accuracy, the device is on point. It exhibits a colour accuracy of an average DeltaE of 2.4 and a maximum deviation of 5 against sRGB.Processor, storage & performance
The phone runs on the latest Apple A13 Bionic chip. It has 8.5 billion transistors and is built on a 7nm+ process. This ensures that the chipset is faster and more power-efficient compared to the A12. This is not necessarily a redesign but more of an upgrade.
The chip packs a Hexa-core processor that comes with 2x2.65 GHz Lightning high-performance cores and 4x1.8 GHz Thunder efficient CPU cores. Its Lightning cores are 20% faster and 30% more efficient.
The A13 SoC also comes with a new GPU which is behind keeping the 4-core design that was introduced with the A12. However, it is now 20% faster and 40% more efficient when it comes to delivering a similar performance as A12's GPU.
Its third-generation Neural Engine comes with 8 cores (20% faster, 15% more efficient). It is responsible for image processing which features Deep Fusion as well as Night Mode. Deep Fusion will come at a later software update.
It takes 4 photos before you can press the shutter, 4 when you do and then 1 long exposure. It then picks the best shots and fuses them. The Night Mode was available at launch. When it comes to the iPhone 11 Pro Max memory, you are assured of the 4GB RAM.
With the numerous impressive changes, you can expect to have an almost seamless gaming experience. The big battery capacity is a plus if you intend to play continuously.iPhone 11 Pro Max battery
You may want to note that the phone is powered by a Li-Ion battery of 3,969 mAh. This is the largest capacity Apple had come up with so far. It is also 25% larger than what is found in the XS Max.
It ships with an 18W fast charger. It is possible to charge your iPhone 11 Pro Max using this charger and have it refill up to 50% in just 30 mins. To fully charge the device, you may take up to 2 hours. It supports 10W wireless charging too.
On battery performance stats, you get 21 hours of 3G calls and 15 hours of web browsing on a single charge. Alternatively, you can watch videos for about 19 and a half hours. Add this to the frugal standby and you get an outstanding battery endurance rating.Speaker & call quality
The phone comes with stereo speakers, just like the iPhone XS, X, and 8 series. The first speaker is located at the bottom of the phone, whereas the earpiece serves as the second one. This gives a balanced output. You may notice the earpiece lacking a bit in the bass when compared to the bottom primary. Even so, its loudness seems to be at par.Software
All great devices have excellent software features. Consider the following.OS & features
It runs on 13 out of the box. However, the iOS 13.1 update on September 24 should be installed. The OS sports some great improvements beginning with the new system-wide dark theme, several improvements to battery life and charging, as well as updates on a couple of the default apps. These include the new looks and features on Photos, Maps, Reminders. There is also the Sign-in with Apple ID as part of iOS 13, not to mention the detailed control over location access.
It packs one biometric security feature, its Face ID. The lock screen is simple with two shortcuts to the camera and flashlight. The 3D touch feature has been replaced with the Haptic Touch which requires one to tap and hold for it to be activated.
It lacks a widget and separate app drawer but it comes with folders. Apart from a lot of retained features, the device comes with powerful photo and video editing tools that you will like. They are also very easy to use, allowing you to enjoy the excellent quality of your photos.iPhone 11 Pro Max camera, video, and image quality
The wait is over as Apple finally adds the to its wide+tele setup. As expected, it is an ultra-wide shooter. It comes with a triple 12MP camera at the rear and a selfie setup at the front.
It comes with an all-new triple camera with 12MP sensors. Its main shooter comes packed with large 1.4µm pixels, wide 26mm f/1.8 lens, optical image stabilization (OIS) and Dual Pixel AF.
The second 12MP sensor utilizes a smaller 1.0µm pixels in addition to sporting a telephoto 52mm lens for 2x optical zoom over the main camera. Its lens is now brighter than before at f/2.0, OIS is available, but it lacks a Dual Pixel AF like on the main cam.
The new entrant is the third 12MP sensor of 1.0µm that sits behind the 13mm (120°) ultra-wide-angle lens. It lacks both stabilization and autofocus.
We cannot forget to mention the selfie camera upgrades. The 3D TOF snapper stays for Face ID, portraits, and various Animojis. However, the actual selfie snapper is currently a 12MP shooter and is behind the wider 23mm f/2.2 lens - which is an upgrade from the former 30mm lens on iPhones before it.
Apple maintained the old view though. In case you shoot in portrait - it simulates 30mm lens view and then saves 7MP selfies just as it was before while at the same time rotating the iPhone in landscape uses the full 12MP resolution and FoV. It now comes with a virtual switch for this kind of view. While it is kind of automated, it is possible to have it changed manually.
The new main and telephoto snappers on the iPhone 11 Pros comes with an expanded ISO sensitivity. It has new min/max exposure times as well. The aperture on the telephoto camera is also wider - f/2.0 from f/2.4.
As for the image quality, images will exhibit exemplary detail, very low noise, and pretty high dynamic range. The colours may be accurate but they tend to appear washed out. The contrast is also perfect. You may, however, have to contend with the sharpening being a bit excessive and photos coming out as noticeably over-sharpened.iPhone 11 Pro Max review
