- The Defence Headquarters says the arrest of of Taraba kidnap suspect, Hamisu Bala Wadume, is central to the work of the panel investigating the controversial killings of three policemen
- Over 10 days after escaping in controversial circumstances, Wadume is still on the run
- A DHQ source said the time given for the investigative panel to submit its report has been extended; expressing confidence that Wadume would soon be arrested
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has stated that the arrest of Taraba kidnap suspect, Hamisu Bala Wadume, is central to the work of the Joint Investigative Panel (JIP) investigating the killing of three police officers and a civilian in the state, and would accelerate the panel’s work.
This is as military and police detectives have widened their search for Wadume beyond the boundaries of the land, The Nation reports.
Legit.ng gathers that the search for the kidnap kingpin has been extended to border towns in the north-east and south-east, as the DHQ gave reasons for the extension of the time given to the JIP to submit its report.
Over 10 days after he escaped in controversial circumstances, Wadume is still on the run.
DHQ sources reportedly disclosed that detectives and intelligence personnel combing the nooks and crannies of states in the Middle Belt, the north-east and south-east are yet to apprehend the suspect.
The services of Interpol might have also been enlisted to catch Wadume, in addition to the efforts of security agents in the country.
The source pointed out that security agencies are aware of the onerous responsibility placed on them to ensure the arrest of the principal suspect, expressing optimism that he (Wadume) would soon be arrested.
The source also reportedly confirmed that the time frame given to the panel to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of three policemen, has been extended.
The source said: “We could not give the panel a time frame because we were not sure of the magnitude of the problem. But as events unfolded, we realised they could not finish up with the work within a week or two.
“So, I can tell you that the time has been extended. But still, there is no time frame.
“What we are concerned about is that the panel will do a thorough job; the outcome of which will be commendable.
“And if you look at the composition of the panel, you will know that these are officers who have distinguished themselves professionally over the years in their various services.”
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Army captain fingered in the killing of three police officers attached to Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team, from wanted kidnap kingpin, Hamisu Wadume.
The captain was also said to have threatened to deal with police officers attached to Ibi Police Station, for not cooperating with him.
It was also gathered that only two police officers, including one assistant superintendent of police, Aondonna Iorbee, the DCO, Ibi Police Station and the crime officer, Ibi Police Station, Inspector Aliyu, were in police custody at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
